Maryland is in the perfect location when it comes to daytrips. It’s small enough to drivethrough in a few hours and is nestled between very charismatic cities includingPhiladelphia and Washington D.C..We have beautiful beaches in one direction and majestic mountains in theother. It's safe to say that it's pretty difficult to get restless around these parts.

Frederick, Maryland makes for a fantastic weekend getaway in itself. The city houses a number of antique shops, delectable restaurants and countless outdoor attractions fit for people of all ages. It also has a number of wineries and breweries fit for a more mature audience. A great place to entertain guests from out of town or incorporate into a Bachelor's weekend is the Flying Dog Brewery.

Flying Dog Brewery was created after a series of events involving a few weary hikers, strong alcohol, and a strange vision somewhere in the Himalayan Mountains. George Stranahan, the man who initiated the journey was so inspired that he decided to open a brew pub in Aspen, CO in 1990. I'll leave the rest of the story for one of the brewery's charismatic factory tour guides.

In the early 1990's Flying Dog moved from a small brewery in Denver to it's current state-of-the-art brewing facility located in Frederick, MD. Ever since it was founded, the company has stayed true to it's philosophy, making great beer and not letting anyone stand in it's way. The company has created an extensive selection of signature craft brews ranging from Pale Ales to coffee based stouts. The brand has developed a large following of devoted drinkers. Another thing the company is know for are the cheeky names given to each draft. Famed illustrator, Ralph Steadman has developed a long standing relationship with the company, designing labels for each and every draft produced in the factory.

The Factory Tour is a fantastic opportunity in taste-testing and a great way to learn about the art of brewing beer. Upon paying the $5 entry fee you are given six wooden tokens and a Flying Dog tasting glass. Visitors are encouraged to taste as many different beers as possible. Each token is worth one refill and needless to say, it might be best to stay in Frederick for the night The factory guides are funny, informative, and highly entertaining. Once the tour is over guests are taken to the factory bar where the real fun begins. Reservations can be made on the Flying Dog Website, however be fore-warned it's best to book in advance. Weekend tours fill especially fast, but for something this unique it's worth the wait.

"I started my love affair with yoga about seven years ago.

It's hard to say what I love most about yoga; there are so many things! But if I had to choose just one, I'd say that the best part is the relationship I've developed with myself through the practice. It's led to so much physical, mental and spiritual growth.

I started working with bridal parties a few years ago. The experiences have been so rewarding, both for the bride and for me. A wedding can be such an intimate, love-filled event, so to be a part of that is really an honor. And for the bride, starting the day off with some physical movement, focus and some time just for herself before the whirlwind begins, has proven to be invaluable. It sets the stage to move through the day with intention.

Arranging pre-wedding yoga is pretty simple. Just pick the date, the time and we can work out a venue. Often the brides like to hold the class at their hotel or a nice outdoor spot, depending on the season. I bring all of the mats and anything else we might need, even music if that's requested. We can discuss how vigorous or relaxed the class should be; if there's anything you want to do in the practice; the class can be as specific as you like."

Our New Favorite Candle

There is no hiding the fact that we love candles in this office. We find the scents soothing and wonderful although the running joke is that Elizabeth lights them and Pam (the worrier) goes around behind her blowing them out so that we don't accidentally leave one lit overnight.

The new candle around here is Diptyque, an indulgence that is hard to justify until you get a whiff. The candles burn forever and have a clean, not coy fragrance.

We looked up the history of Diptyque Paris and learned that three artisans (Christiane Gautrot, Yves Coueslant and Desmond Knox-Leet), united by a passion for creativity and design, became friends and business associates and opened a shop at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain to showcase their avant-garde fabric designs and decorative items from their travels.

In 1963, they introduce the first diptyque scented candle. In 1968, the first line of diptyque fragrances is launched. Today, the three Parisian artists are world-renown purveyors of fragrance and scented candles.

Our fragrance of choice is Baies (berries) and we are looking forward to trying the other fragrances as well. Although the candles are not recommended for events where food is served (we always use unscented for that), the Diptyque candles would make the perfect gift for someone who has everything.

A Perfect Toast

In our years of wedding planning, we've seen the good and the bad, the pretty and the ugly. Surprisingly enough, a lot of that comes in the form of the toasts given to the bride and groom. Instead of doing the bride and groom and yourself a disservice, let us give some pointers to help guide you along.

The term "short and sweet" exists for a reason. People have the attention span of a gnat. There's no such thing as a bad 10 second toast and there's no such thing as a good 10 minute toast. No one in the history of people speaking, has ever muttered "I wish that speech had been longer."
We mean it - that toast better be so sweet our teeth hurt. This isn't Comedy Central doing a roast, it's a wedding. Tasteless humor will not be met with thunderous applause. Aunt Cindy doesn't want to hear about your crazy shenanigans so whatever happened "that crazy night" needs not be spoken of. Keep grandma and grandpas' vision of their little angels intact.
Trial run (and error)/practice makes perfect. Give this speech a try on actual human beings. Your reflection in your bathroom mirror won't tell you that you aren't as hilarious as you think you are but your friends will, that's why we love them - for their honesty.
Mean it. Every word of your speech should be sincere, heartfelt and specific. Don't just tell the bride she's "totally awesome" - that's a given. Tell her she's a role model, you admire her and she's been an inspiration. You were hand-picked by the bride and/or groom, they're counting on you to say something original and loving.
Alcoholic beverages help us lighten up, everyone knows that. But you see that champagne glass in your hand? Yes, the one you're pointing at the guests of honor. That glass doesn't have to be the first one you've held that night but it better not be your seventh.

We know it's easier said that done but you can do it. We believe in you.

Black Eyed Susan
The Official Drink of The Preakness from The Maryland Jockey Club
Serves 2

1 ounce Vodka

1 ounce Mt. Gay Rum

½ ounce Cointreau or Triple Sec

6 ounces Orange Juice

3 Ounces Pineapple Juice

Mix ingredients together and serve over crushed ice in a tall glass.
Garnish with a wedge of pineapple, and orange slice, or a cherry.

Being a female who's a fan of professional sports sure ain't easy. Henderson's Wharf, an inn and conference center in Fells Point, ranked number 20 in the world and number 2 in the United States, according to TripAdvisor's Travel Choice Awards in 2011. No other hotel in the Mid-Atlantic region was named to either of those lists.

The average stay will set you back $200 a night (that price includes parking, breakfast and internet) but who can pass up the opportunity to stay at a world renowned hotel? Especially seeing as how it's practically nestled in our backyard.

Every bride deals with excessive stress at some point during their wedding planning. Little details have a habit of creeping up on us, and it seems there's so much to worry about - the flowers, the guest list, the dress, oh my!

But let's pause for a moment to appreciate the amount of stress princess-to-be, Kate Middleton must be under.

While most of us plan weddings for a few hundred guests, Kate has to worry about pleasing 1,900 friends, family and world dignitaries. Keep in mind, those are just the ones invited.

To show the true magnitude of this event, we'll give you some numbers.

89 = the hours of royal wedding related programming on TLC

2.4 billion people , or 35% of the world's population, expected to follow via TV, streaming and radio

10 - the number of years networks have had a balcony across the street from Westminster Abbey on reserve

400 - the number of CNN staffers working on wedding coverage (just CNN!)

This July marks the 30 year anniversary of the marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. In 1981, TV was pretty much a three network operation, cable was in its infancy, the internet hadn't been invented yet (no Facebook? Yikes!) and cell phones were virtually nonexistent. 750 million viewers tuned in to see Lady Di walk down the aisle, a mere handful in comparison to the 2.4 billion that will watch Kate. Add an additional 800,000 that are expected to show up to Buckingham Palace - all snapping cell phone pictures and videos, tweeting and updating their Facebook statuses - and it's a true testament to the changing times.

So why all the hype? And why are we so invested in this stranger? Because it's the same story Disney has been telling us since we were little girls. Kate is our modern day Cinderella. She is from a family of humble beginnings, she's not royalty and she won the heart of a prince. And just because the man that put that ring on your finger isn't going to be the King of England some day, that doesn't mean you haven't won the heart of a prince. Just be glad you don't have 2.4 billion people tuning in to judge your wedding.

It's no secret that not all women are a size 2. It's also no secret that those women that aren't a size 2, have a "humbling" experience when it comes to shopping for our wedding gowns. Most shops and boutiques only carry dresses in single digit numbers because "plus-sized dresses don't look good on the hangers," according to most salon owners.

That quote didn't sit well with Yukia Walker. Because of her own awful experiences trying to fit her size 14 self into a gown that was an 8 or smaller, she decided she was going to take a portion of her own wedding budget and open her own salon.

A concern shared by many brides is what to do with their hair for the reception. For the ceremony, the veil is the focal point of the hair but what happens after the ceremony when the veil is removed? A bride can always ask her hair stylist to stay around to create a whole new look after the ceremony; but, in the interest of saving time, I'll showcase my favorite options for changing up your hair on your own for your reception.

Red roses are classic and this piece just screams classic pin-up girl. Throw on some red lipstick to really kick up the fun.

Colorful flowers are also a great idea for your maid of honor as a way to make her look special.

With a simple Google search, tons and tons of sites for hair flowers are at your disposal. Etsy, Retro Glamor Girl and HairFlowers.Net are my favorite sites for flowers as they offer quality products that are inexpensive. No need to break the bank over such a simple detail.

An idea as simple as changing boring, drab shoelaces into colorful, fun ones has alluded us all. And I'm choosing to forget the awkward teenage years when we all thought mismatching shoelaces (if not shoes), was definitely the way to go.

We are talking about taking your groom's and/or groomsmen's shoes and adding a shoelace that corresponds with your wedding colors for an unexpected pop of color.

Kristin + Bennett: The Details

Not one thing was overlooked when incorporating all things baseball into Kristin and Bennett's wedding.

The Pleasure of Your Company designed their baseball glove invitations.

Due to the extensive beading on her dress, Kristin knew she wouldn't need a necklace so she worked closely with Westphal Jewelers to create these one of a kind, orange sapphire and diamond earrings.

Of course her shoes needed to be orange!

The groomsmen all wore black, orange and white argyle socks with classic black Chuck Taylors. Also, Bennett's step-mother made all the orange ties and pockets squares herself.

Karen Lock used carnations to create an arrangement that looked like an actual baseball.

The table numbers were all past and present Oriole players numbers.

Oh My Chocolate created caramel apples with the Oriole logo on them as favors for the guests. These little tokens were highly coveted as even I was hoping someone might leave one behind for me.

A close friend of Kristin and Bennett's carved pumpkins with their names and initials in them for a really neat touch.

Instead of the traditional guestbook, the couple had a custom Orioles jersey made at Pro-Am. Because their last name is So, they refer to themselves as Mr. & Mrs. So and So, hence the name on the jersey.

One of the most awesome parts of having your wedding at Camden Yards? The pictures on the field!

Due to Kristin's love of the Baltimore Orioles, did you really think she would have her celebration anywhere other than Oriole Park at Camden Yards? On the seventh floor of the warehouse, guests enjoyed cocktails and a served dinner while looking out over the field.

Kristin emphasized that she wanted her guests to have fun above all else. Her wedding party really helped to set that tone as they were introduced (of course to "All Star" by Smash Mouth, how fitting!). Though it's hard to see, the bridal party changed into shirts that either said Groomsman or Bridesmaid on the front and had their last name and favorite number on the back.

The bride and groom share a special moment. Their first dance was to "Luna" by the Smashing Pumpkins.

What would a celebration at Camden Yards be without the Oriole Bird? How fun!

Kristin + Bennett: The Ceremony

Kristin and Bennett decided to have their ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore on the 15th floor in what used to be Pisces restaurant. We kept the decor to a minimum, allowing the breathtaking views of the Inner Harbor to serve as the focal point.

Because of Kristin's love of the Orioles, she worked with The Pleasure of Your Company to design a "line up card," making her wedding party into a real baseball team.

The bride's uncle and step-dad gave her away. Crystal Strings provided classical instruments to play contemporary music. (The wedding party walked down to "Yellow" by Coldplay and Kristin processed to "Tonight, Tonight" by the Smashing Pumpkins.)

Though I'm behind on showing off all the 2010 weddings, I assure you the details of this wedding are right in the forefront of my memory. On an absolutely perfect day in October, Kristin and Bennett's wedding day got under way.

The bride is a huge Orioles fan so her Maggie Sottero dress was adorned with custom orange crystal bling, courtesy of Bridals by Elena.

The gorgeous flowers were designed by Karen Lock.

Kristin is a makeup artist so she chose to do her own makeup the day of her wedding.

Allie + David: Part 2

After the beautiful wedding ceremony, guests were invited back to the family owned Turf Valley Country Club for a truly gorgeous reception. Allie's wish to completely transform the ballroom into a garden party was achieved by using thousands of flowers, specialty lighting and extensive fabric draping.

In addition to a raw bar, lots of butlered hors d'oeuvres and a pasta station for cocktail hour, guests were treated to sushi made by on-site sushi chefs from Baltimore's Matsuri Restaurant. The couple chose a served signature drink of refreshing Peach Bellini's.

This photo shows how even a large wedding party can have fun seating at a served dinner. This is a bridal table for 30 guests. It's important to seat the wedding party with their dates, place seating all around the table, and use a table that is at least 36" wide so that there is room for flowers but still close enough across the table to converse.

Barrettes are Back

Flipping through the Wall Street Journal, something in the Style & Fashion section grabbed our attention. According to the Spring runways, barrettes are making their way back into fashion.

We really can't think of any better way to show a pop of color on brides than to feature a fun, colorful barrette in her hair. While it adds the appropriate amount of bling, it's also simple and subtle without being over the top. It's such a simple way to tie in your wedding colors, having a barrette that matches your bridesmaids dressed. Or, it can even serve as your "something blue".

Barrettes are so easily incorporated into any hairstyle, we really don't know how they ever went out of style.

The Making of A Candy Bar

Over the years we have created quite a few Candy Bars for our clients and we are especially proud of the one we created at a recent summer wedding. The client and the guests loved it and all the candy was gone by the end of the evening.
To create an amazing Candy Bar for your event, first decide the color palette. Obviously, the one here is Hot Pink, White, and Black. For the wrapped chocolate bars pictured here, we used Hershey Bars and wrapped them in pretty wrapping paper from Target and added a custom label from My Wedding Labels. The pink basket is from Michaels.

We purchased these white trays years ago at Target for a Baseball theme late night snack tray and have used them so many times since. All of our clients are invited to use any item in our stock room for their wedding at no charge. The trays are lined with colorful scrapbook paper from Michaels.
We love the trays so much that we purchased them in aqua this year.

Also in our stock room are lots of pretty glass jars in various shapes and sizes. We assign each candy variety a jar ahead of time so we know how much candy to purchase.

The white shelves, purchased at Ikea and now also part of our inventory, allow for some height to be added to The Candy Bar. Underneath the shelves are cute, hot pink paper lanterns.

Two of our favorite candies to use: Jordan Almonds (available in so many colors) and nonpareils because everyone loves those. We mix dark and light chocolate for the nonpareils.

Here we used small cello bags with a header of scrapbook paper and a custom name tag. They are filled with salt water taffy.

In order to make the Candy Bar especially amazing, Perkins Productions installed a drape behind the table and Perfect Settings provided a cute black and white polka dot linen.

These small boxes are available at any craft store and we added a label and ribbon. Perfect size for a take home favor.

We have a large storage room next to our office which houses a wonderful collection of wedding items. All of our clients have the opportunity to use any of the items at no charge on the event day. The collection includes: baskets, vases, candle holders, table numbers, easels, silver cake stands, umbrellas, paper parasols, shepherd's hooks, tiki torches, parking signs, party signs, glass candy jars, etc.

Our newest addition is this cute chalkboard, perfect for the dinner menu. Not only does it save money by eliminating menu cards, but it is an environmentally friendly way to introduce the dinner menu.

I might have found a new favorite local restaurant. College daughter and I worked a long day in the office and decided to treat ourselves to a dinner out. We ended up at BlueStone in Timonium, just a couple of miles from the office.

What we didn't know was that from 4-7 pm, all wine by the glass is 1/2 price (nice choices) and "small plates" were 1/2 price as well. Yes, it was a great deal, but better than that, the food was amazing. We first had Fried Green Tomatoes with Lump Crabmeat, lemon butter sauce, shallots, garlic and chives that was truly a taste of summer. The second course of Seared Ahi Tuna was even better. The Chesapeake Shrimp Wrap was so rich and so good that we had some left to take home. The other small plates offered at 1/2 price were Flash Fried Calamari, Caprese Flatbread, Crispy Crab Balls, Shrimp Wrapped with Bacon, and Grilled Portabella Mushroom.

You must visit and enjoy the simple freshness of the food and the wonderful, friendly atmosphere. Even with a generous tip, we both enjoyed a great dinner (and wine for me) for under $ 40.

Eco-Friendly Spirits

When preparing the bar menu for your wedding, perhaps consider adding some organic alcohol to the order. For instance, Del Maguey Minero Mezcal (pronounced Ma Gay) is a tequila produced in Oaxaca, Mexico and is made from organic agave.

Herrington On The Bay

Despite the fact that Herrington on the Bay has been the site of many, many weddings over the years, until recently, I had never been there. The beautiful waterfront venue is located about 25 minutes south of Annapolis, just off Solomon's Island Road in Anne Arundel County.

Just a few minutes into my visit with Julie Loos from the sales and catering office at Herrington, it was clear that this venue was special. The greeting was warm and welcoming, and the availability of good, accurate information was perfect for a first site visit. Julie is so knowledgeable about the venue and while I enjoyed the tour of the huge property, the best was yet to come.

Herrington on the Bay, with clear views of the Chesapeake Bay, has 600+ acres of wooded walking trails and the Herrington chefs are committed to offering the best in sustainable Chespeake cuisine. They bake all breads in house using organic and natural ingredients. Organic herbs are grown on site and used in food preparation. Chesapeake Roasters coffee is served, a local, eco-friendly roaster. In addition, they do not use Styrofoam, the office recycles ink cartridges and copier paper and even cleaning products are eco-friendly and citrus based. For this management team at Herrington, their intentions and practices are truly genuine, not the "jump-on-the-bandwagon" mentality.

There are several options for wedding ceremonies and receptions at Herrington, but my favorite was certainly the permanent, waterfront tent which they call The Paradise Ballroom. It is private, completely open for whatever decorating visions a bride would have, and has amazing views of the water.

I am currently working on a July 2010 wedding taking place at Herrington and I hope to be back many times in the future as I am truly on board with their goals, vision, and the spirit of what they are doing there.

Down By The Seashore

I'll admit it: we plan our annual family beach vacation around my wedding schedule. That means that we always book last minute (a month ahead) which makes the task crazy. We love to stay at the Delaware beaches, directly on the ocean, in a charming yet immaculately clean beach house. That, my friend, is very hard to find this far into the season.

So after spending hours on the Internet searching for the perfect place to rent, I have to concede to calling a realtor tomorrow. Just when we thought that everything possible could be found on-line, sometimes one must just pick-up the phone and ask for assistance. Wish me luck.

Expert Advice for Industry Pros

It was a pleasure to finally meet my on-line industry buddy Liene Stevens recently. Liene is the owner of Splendid Communications, an on-line media consultancy for the wedding and lifestyle events industry. She and I are members of a couple of on-line groups which discuss the most current topics we face in the wedding industry.

Just a few weeks ago, Liene graciously offered to make her way from NYC to speak at the monthly Baltimore NACE (National Association of Catering Executives) meeting. NACE is the industry association for caterers, event planners, rental companies, entertainment agencies, hotels, floral decorators, and anyone else involved in creating special events. The Baltimore chapter of NACE is very strong and very active and this year I am serving on the board of directors as co-chair of programs.

During her presentation, Liene spoke of the role that social media plays in our businesses. She related startling facts, gave great advice, and related funny anecdotes as she presented ideas to move a business forward using social media.

Irvine Nature Center

There is a new event venue in Baltimore and you really need to make time to visit. Irvine Nature Center is located in the lovely Caves Valley section of Baltimore County and offers a unique and private venue for all types of special events. Irvine is 116 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and meadows. During the day, the Nature Center is a haven for visiting school children and moms with tots as they wander through the exhibit hall featuring creatures and foliage and then venture outdoors to hike the paths, have a picnic lunch or visit the bird sanctuary.

In the evening, the center opens for parties on a beautiful, new tented patio surrounded by trees. Because the venue is new, it features a great catering kitchen, modern restrooms and air-conditioned space for the cocktail portion of the wedding reception. Brides can be married in the area behind the center or take a short walk to the gazebo which features gorgeous views of the valley.

Irvine Nature Center encourages brides to hire a caterer for their event who features locally grown and sustainable food, who composts and recycles, and who uses eco-friendly serving pieces. The rental coordinator at Irvine is the very kind Kim Brock and the venue accommodates up to 150 guests for the wedding.

Local Color Flowers

I love discovering new wedding resources and talent and recently had the pleasure to meet a new (to me) florist. Local Color Flowers, owned by Ellen Frost has a niche market in which they provide floral decor for special events using only fresh, seasonal and sustainable flowers cultivated by local specialty growers.

Think about it: because only Mother Nature knows for sure which flowers will be blooming at a particular time of year, Local Colors isn't able to be very specific about the flowers the bride will have at her wedding. This requires a lot of trust on the part of the bride, but judging from their popularity, Local Colors has come through with amazing floral designs for their clients. Ellen gathers lots of information from the bride about colors, style, venue and size of the event and then uses her creativity and available inventory of flowers to create wonderful wedding florals.

I love the concept of adding this eco-friendly element to a wedding and it was such a pleasure to meet such nice people behind the concept. Be sure to check out their blog for photos of recent weddings.

Things to Do: Baltimore

A new exhibition at The Evergreen Museum and Library is certainly worth a visit to anyone interested in interior design and decorating. "Modernism at Evergreen: Baltimore's Billy Baldwin", explores the life and brilliance of noted Baltimore-born interior designer Billy Baldwin. In his lifetime (1903-1983), Mr. Baldwin's client list included such fashionable hosts as Jackie Kennedy, Harvey Ladew, Cole Porter, and Diana Vreeland.

In reading about the exhibit, I was really was drawn to a quote about Mr. Baldwin's design principles which included " the importance of the personal, comfortable and the new" which is exactly the principles we keep in mind when designing weddings. I also chuckled at his quote in The Times: "The word that almost makes me throw up is satin" (me too!).

Some of Mr. Baldwin's signature design elements were cotton, shutters, chintz slipcovers and wicker covered Parsons tables. He authored two books: Billy Baldwin Decorates and Billy Baldwin Remembers.

Evergreen Museum and Library in Baltimore is open by guided tour on the hour from 11-4 Tuesday through Friday and from 12-4 on Saturdays and Sundays. The last tour begins at
3:00 pm each day. Admission is $ 6 and the exhibit runs until October 24th.

The Real Heroes

In the past year since last Memorial Day, 10 Maryland service men have died while defending The United States of America in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Throughout the U.S., 400 soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen have been casualties of the war since last Memorial Day.

The Walters Art Museum is in such demand for weddings because despite the hefty rental fee, it is an amazing venue.

Another Saturday in May meant another wedding in Baltimore and we were thrilled to be helping this bride and groom with their wedding. Jocelyn and Henry share a culture, a profession (they are both docs) and even a last name (even before they were married) so when they were planning their wedding, they shared all the duties and decisions.
